Import from Proton Drive
Download your photos from Proton Drive on the web, then drag the folders into the Ente desktop app. For a large library, download in batches and check your counts before deleting anything.
What you need
- A computer with enough free space for your whole library.
- Your Proton account password, and a two-factor code if you use one.
- Time. A large library can take several sessions.
Step 1: Find your photos
Your photos may be in more than one place: photos backed up from the Proton Drive phone app, and folders you uploaded yourself. Check both.
Step 2: Download from the web app
- Go to drive.proton.me and sign in.
- Open the folder you want.
- Select the photos or folders. You can select several at a time.
- Click Download. When you download several items at once, Proton saves them as a single ZIP (Proton).
- Unzip it into a folder on your computer, then download the next batch.
If a large ZIP fails, select fewer items. Proton's Drive help has the current details.
Proton has desktop apps for Windows and macOS (Proton Drive download), but its Photos help doesn't describe a full photo export from them. The web app is the reliable route.
Step 3: Check dates and locations
Open a few photos and check that their dates and locations look right. Then compare the number of files on your computer with the number Proton shows.
Step 4: Upload to Ente
In the Ente desktop app, sign in and drag the folder in. To keep each subfolder as its own album, choose Separate albums. Learn more in Import from local hard disk.
Keep your Proton copy until you've checked everything arrived in Ente.
Why move from Proton Drive to Ente?
Proton Drive and Ente are both end-to-end encrypted, so privacy isn't the difference. The difference is what each is built for. Proton Drive is a cloud drive for all your files. Ente is a photos app, with face grouping, search, a map, and shared albums for family.
Face grouping, search, and the map run on your device, so Ente never sees your photos (Security and privacy FAQ). Shared albums are end-to-end encrypted too (Sharing).
Next step
Get the Ente desktop app and drag your downloaded folders in.
